Frequently Asked Questions
What is the modular concept in fillet boards?
The modular approach allows you to build your system to your specific filleting and cutting needs. Each board can be joined to another board in a variety of configurations to fit your exact purpose of the moment. Multiple boards can be carried in a convenient carry case and stored in a small area when not in use.
Accessories attach to the board(s) in any area you choose or may be used as standalone units. This versatility is unique to Fillet KingŪ Products.
What holds the fish to the board?
The patented grate contains squares that each has sharp edges that provide the grip on the fish. These catch on the scales of the fish to keep it securely in place with very little hand pressure. Even with fish that have been scaled or fish with no scales the 1400 sharp edges grip the fish and keep it from moving during the filleting process. A no slip surface is the safest way to fillet a fish and this is what the grate provides.
What makes the product "no mess"?
The product is of two piece construction consisting of the grate and the base. The grate allows the mess to fall through to the base that contains the mess so the board surface remains the same from the first fish to the last without the need to stop to clean the grate surface. The base will hold the slime and mess from over 100 fish before it needs to be emptied so there is no having to stop to clean the board or the area during the entire filleting process.
What about cleaning the product after use?
The grate and base separate for easy cleaning by passing under water from a hose or faucet. The product can also be further cleaned by use of a dishwasher to sanitize the unit. The top element of the dishwasher is recommended to prevent warping of the grate. The material is high impact polystyrene and does not hold an odor so the product is perfectly acceptable for kitchen duties between fishing uses. If you forget or are unable to clean it immediately after use, you may soak it in a bucket of warm water with detergent to loosen the residue. We offer a brush as an accessory for stubborn material but any type brush will easily remove any residue.
Is the board secure on any surface?
Each board comes with 4 bumper pads that you attach to the four corners of the base bottom when you first use the product. These will hold the board to most any surface including a wet surface to secure the board for filleting or cutting uses. The bumpers are a standard household item found in any hardware or department store and are very inexpensive to replace should one comes loose over time. Any size will do the job but be sure you replace them all with the same size especially if part of a modular system (two or more boards joined). Uneven bumpers will cause the joiners to not fit perfectly and the boards to teeter slightly.
Will the board yellow with age?
Ultraviolet rays will yellow the boards over time if left in direct sunlight. We suggest the product be placed in its carry bag when not in use to prolong the bright white color of the original product.
Will the product hurt my fillet knife?
The product is made of a high impact polystyrene material that has a much harder surface than a standard plastic kitchen type board. The edge of a fillet knife will not leave cut marks on the grate under normal use and thus maintain the "edge" to the knife. The joiner system is made of aluminum and sits either flush or slightly below the board surface so as to not affect the "edge" on the fillet knife. Over time the grate may become nicked but that does not affect the purpose of the grate and in fact increases the gripping power of the grate.
How do joiners work?
Each patented joiner is handmade to sit between the edges of two boards and the holes sit on the shoulders of the base deck. This makes a seamless surface between the two boards so that mess stays within the base and not off the board surface. There is horizontal play with the joiners to allow a fit that sits flush or slightly below the grate surface.
Does the carry case really complete the system?
The carry case is made of Denier Nylon and is urethane coated to be water resistant. It provides ultraviolet protection of the product while also acting as a caddy for fillet knives, accessories, and sharpening stones. It also is perfect for gift presentation or for promotional message or logo identification use.
Why isn't the product in more stores?
We are growing the business at a controlled rate and manufacture the product in Wisconsin not in China. Our product has grown from word of mouth by people who know how to fillet fish properly and with pride. We call them "disciples". It is a product that has no equal in performing its function and those that own the system swear by it and provide us our growth. The product is a "no brainer" purchase whenever it is demonstrated for those that fillet fish with a passion for perfection and efficiency. Take a look at our Master Filleters Page and look at the credentials of the people in our group and you will see some legendary fishing personalities. They will take our product national. Today we own the market in Wisconsin and surrounding states and are growing dealers in all directions towards the sea coasts.
Is it really a lifetime warranty?
When we started we told people if they bought our product and it did not do everything we said it would we would give them their money back and purchase for them any fillet board on the market that they thought was better. We never had to buy anyone a board. As this was an unheard of guarantee we had to change it to merely a lifetime guarantee. We have sold thousands of our boards and we have honored our commitment in every case. Most were grates warped from too hot dishwashers, stepped on grates that snapped the neck, and microwave toasted boards that were all cases of neglect not workmanship. We have never had to refund a dime to anyone because they were dissatisfied with the product.
What about the kitchen use of the product?
We market the product to the kitchen market in selected markets as "Kitchen Corral" because of the kitchen uses. It controls the mess and grips the food item just as it does when filleting fish. In the kitchen the uses are more than we can list here and we get a kick out all the uses in the kitchen we are told about from our customers ---men and women. All we can tell you is that having a kitchen board that contains the mess is one more barrier between the counter top and the floor regardless of what kitchen use is being applied.
